Candidates contesting the upcoming General Elections must apply for additional security if they need it and such security will then be authorized based on the threat level of the candidates and recommendations from the Ministry of Defence.
Police spokesman SP Preshantha Jayakody, speaking to Daily Mirror online, said that police protection will also be given for election rallies after the necessary permits are obtained by the candidates.
He noted that it was the duty of the police to provide security to election rallies and as such the police will continue to perform those duties.

This is a good idea. Otherwise Sri Lankan Police department do not know why they asked for additional security. By asking them to provide a reason will help to gather information as well. This is a brilliant idea. I hope this Department of Police will practice this thin with Sri Lankan businessmen as well. Coz, then we dont need to worry about black markets. If they ask for the security from Police then Policemen will get additional money as well as additional information

Looking at the number of candidates on the fray, one wonders if the total police force has to be assigned for their security leaving the general public ln the lurch.

It means, like Weerawansa, Mervyn Silva + MR & Bros. have more death threats, for them then the entire Police & Army will serve, that's what you want to say.

only ppl contesting from the govt party will have a very high threat level while all in the opposition will b having very low threat level...
isnt this the norm???

So the ministry of defence has become the judge, jury, and executor?? Unfortunately "assessing threat level" is a futile exercise when it involves a politicized institution like MOD
