Police have unearthed valuable information from a suspect regarding the string of killings of beggars in and around the city of Colombo, officials said today.

The police officers who conducted investigations and inquiries into these cases have extracted such information from a beggar arrested in connection with these murders. He is currently being interrogated.

According basic interrogation, the suspected beggar has been involved in the killing of 15 other beggars in areas such as Kotahena, Peliyagoda, Kompanna Veediya, Maradana, Kiribathgoda, Kelaniya, Bambalapitiya and Mount Lavinia.

The suspect has allegedly assaulted these beggars to death for begging in the areas where he did not want them to be. Beggars have defined areas among themselves for begging. The police said that the suspect is a drug addict. The suspect has pretended to be hearing impaired initially.

However, after tests conducted at the Deaf and Blind school in Ratmalana, it was proven that he was not hearing impaired at all. (Srinath Prasanna Jayasuriya and Rekha Tharangani)
