Alleged lack of sufficient backup power at WTC

Inadequate backup power in the World Trade Centre building in Colombo Fort, had forced many people to use the stairs during a power outage this evening, witnesses said.

It was also reported that one elevator filled with people between floors had stuck for a long period during the blackout.

However, a spokesperson for Overseas Realty (Ceylon) PLC, which maintains the building, said that there was adequate backup power.

He said there was no fault in the generators and they had supplied power, as usual, when the mains power supply stopped.

“One incident was reported of an elevator being stuck for about 10 minutes without generator’s power. That was due to a technical hitch in the specific elevator and not the fault of the generator. All the other elevators picked up speed and moved,” he said.

I was at office at WTC when this happened and the offices didn't have power. It was dark outside due to rain and people couldn't continue their work. I left office early due to this and had to use the stairs. WTC rent was almost doubled an year ago but power and parking space remains a big issue despite several complaints made.

My office is at the WTC and they have always had a serious issue with power, parking space and insufficient lifts.

They should at least switch off the lifts one day per week. The exercise will do us good.

Hi.. Me to experienced. Very poor operations. I too tooked number of staircases. There was no announcement when this was happening. Even there fire drills so stupid ones. Just inform how to use exit way. Even exit stairs are high risk why those are small staircases. Dont even dream to work in WTC office. No parking High cost Ventilation Issues Dry Toilets etc... via DM Android App
