JVP leader Somawansa Amarasinghe speaking to Daily Mirror online maintained that he did not know of the existence of 'Kumar Mahaththaya'. responding to a query by the Daily Mirror as to the JVP's response on the detainment of the wife and children of the elusive JVP rebel leader Kumar Gunarathnam, Amarasinghe said no such person existed in the party. " How could I respond to this? There was no such person in our party," he said.

Kumar Gunarathnam had allegedly been a part of the top rung of the JVP and had been the main force behind the new faction that emerged within the JVP last year. However when a contacted earlier by the Daily Mirror a senior JVP politburo member confirmed that he recieved news about the detainment and did not dispute the existence of the defacto leader of the breakaway group.
