United National Party (UNP) spokesman and Propaganda Unit Head Harin Fernando said today provincial council elections would be held after April this year and that his party was also gearing up for it.

He said this in response to reports which said President Maithripala Sirisena had instructed the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) to be prepared for provincial council elections and told Daily Mirror that the UNP was also of the opinion that PC elections should not be delayed.

Responding to the statement made by former defense secretary Gotabaya Rajapaksa that he was ready to contest the presidential election, the minister said Mr. Rajapaksa’s entry into the presidential race was not an issue for the UNP.  (Yohan Perera)
