A tense situation was reported at the Galle Face Green today when the police took action to evict the people who had gathered to commemorate the people who died due to various reasons while being involved in the Aragalaya.

It was reported that at least five persons were arrested during the incident.

The police had informed those gathered at the Galle Face Green through loudspeakers to leave the premises when the commemoration started.

The police and anti-riot units took action to disperse the crowds.

Another matter the UN and UN HCR especially must make note of.

    Ranil's powe game Sunday, 09 October 2022 09:24 PM

It shows the kind of democracy we have in this country. If they are commemorating those who died since May 09th why police interfere And arrest the unarmed protesters. This has become a police rule in the country. Because of incidents of this nature UNHRC passed resolution against the govt for it's anti democracy acts. If this situation continues none of the countries will help Ranil and Rajapakshas to save us from this crisis situation. Only those seven countries will help you.

Ranil is a crook Sunday, 09 October 2022 09:38 PM

Rajapakshas are acting like Putin of Russia through Ranil and committing all sorts of crimes to save their power base by hook or crook.

UN and UNHCR should be re-formed without siding with the US being engaging in CRIMINAL ACT violating the law, taking no note of those crimes that were committed in IRAQ, LIBYA, EGYPT, TUNISIA, BOSNIA

The Galle Face and its surrounding areas should be declared as prohibitive for mass gatherings and agitations and only for leisure activities.

This is why the police always has been and always will be hated by the citizens of this country. And we go around with begging bowls expecting every country to help poor us. Pathetic and an insult to our so called democracy.

    Cherath Sunday, 09 October 2022 10:30 PM

Only a government that fears the demonstrations might be a threat will oppose it. Because that government knows it has acted against its people.

We can understand now what will happened in the future , one day the police who attacked the protestors will supper and also we can see few police being robbed some areas cross the country so I am sure they will feel it harder and harder more policemen tend to that kind of activity after that they realized what happened to them. That day they can not escape brom their chilre's blames.

We are viewing the opposite of the system change that we asked for. Freedom of speech disregarded by the Police. Time for the UNHCR to press the government further. If the Government officials can be charged in the world criminal court proceedings must commence sooner

I watched a video covering the event when a mother with a child, who was away from any protester, but filming with her mobile, was physically tormented and arrested and the child was heard screaming. What the hell is wrong with our Police? Have their souls being sold to the devil (the Rajapakses and the Pohottuwas)? Another man with a child in his arms was given the same treatment, not sure if they are in custody. These thuttu deke Policemen should be held accountable for these third-grade actions.

Sadly this is our culture to harm mother, child and infant if it is from the other side. Only democratic country can have police with heart/compassion when meeting vulnerable persons who are not threat to others. Reducing military down to 30,000 and cutting back power of government to stifle free speech are my ideas to improve things. What are yours?

The batalanda scoundrel is instilling more fear in the minds of the people. The day is not far away when the entire country will rise again, against this corrupt and highly ineffective regime.

UN.. why are you waiting? Please issue a statement. IMF.., why are you waiting? Please issue a statement saying the Agreement is on hold for ever until harassment of public is stopped and confirmed by government that it would not happen. European Union… why are you waiting? Please issue a statement that GSP will be on hold until this public harassment is stopped. Hi Rest of the World…Start legal proceedings under your jurisdictions to prosecute all responsible for war and economic crimes. I am a Sinhalese.

Dispersion and tear-gas have become routine job of the Police !

    Punchi Monday, 10 October 2022 07:52 AM

Our security forces are committing similar actions which we support stifling protest in the North and East saying it is required for the stability and security of the country. When they do the same to our protests in Colombo suddenly it becomes a rights issue.

    Sunil Monday, 10 October 2022 07:53 AM

This is repression of people's democratic rights in a vilely loathsome mannner. The despot ranil, who has no mandate from the people of this country is turning it into a police state and attempting to rule by terror, instilling fear in the minds of the people. This cannot be continued for long. The day the people will rise against this sordid regime is not far away.

The actions of the police show in the video how sadly low the training standard is. Apparently there is also no such thing as psychological training. In addition, all senior police officers are completely overeaten and obese and are physically unable to do field service. Furthermore, following the orders of corrupt politicians is a weakness of character. It would be better for them to take sick leave than to take part in such operations.

Commemorating the people who died due to various reasons while being involved in the Aragalaya, would have been but a guise to stir up unrest. How many died while being involved in the Aragalaya? Who were the prominent faces at the planned commemoration? That should paint the picture. It does pain some that the country is slowly trudging on the hard road back to recover from the economic mess as it would be counter to their selfish political and power agendas. They should not be allowed to sabotage the lives of the vast majority of peaceful citizens who yearn for the damage to be repaired as soon as possible to eleviate their hardship.

    Citizen k Monday, 10 October 2022 08:45 AM

More fuel to the fire for human rights council. The protesters would have commemorated it peacefully and would have gone home.I can't see where the police needed to interfere .A lady taking photos with her son was to be arrested and the child crying in terror.this scene will be telecast worldwide.Has our government collectively lost their senses.

    ajith Monday, 10 October 2022 09:27 AM

and that Ali Sabry says UN resolution is against the past rulers. Ali Sabry- past rulers include your BOSS that you have saved several times to the peril of the country

    Amitha Monday, 10 October 2022 12:21 PM

Lest we forget ... remember how extremists in the north used innocent civilians as shields in the frontline with ulterior motives to further their agenda? Remember how genuine peaceful protest movement was hijacked by extremist elements to further their political agenda recently. So let's not be deceived again ... these wolves in sheep clothing creep amongst the peaceful persons ... perhaps there were some very familiar faces in crowd yesterday .... let's not be fooled again by them. By the way, how many actually died due to various reasons while being involved in the Aragalaya that they were seeking to commemorate? Thus will tell the story of the storm they chose to create in a teacup.

Where is US,UN,EU and Nobel Price Committee? Monday, 10 October 2022 12:25 PM

I just can't believe, how USA and EU are imposing sanction on Iran for cracking down protest against the government while Lanka situation has ignored!! I do not understand Nobel for Peace was given to some who stood against the atrocity and those who demonstrated for the sake of peace and democracy. Aragalaya did the same but they are paying the price inside the prison. Why US and EU cannot impose sanction at those cracking down peaceful protest in Sri Lanka against those who sought democracy and stood against human rights abuses??? Look @ these police, sickening.
