A medical specialist attached to the Kuliyapitiya Base Hospital and another employee were arrested by the officials of the Bribery Commission, while accepting a bribe of Rs. 75,000 today at the hospital.

Bribery Commission Director (Investigations) SSP Priyantha Chandrasiri said the physician allegedly demanded a sum of Rs. 25,000 each month from a private laboratory owner for sending patients to the laboratory to obtain medical services.

He said the suspect doctor informed the laboratory owner that he would reject the medical reports issued by the laboratory if the owner refused to make the monthly payment.

SSP Chandrasiri said the owner had already paid Rs. 50,000 to the suspect on an earlier occasion.

The suspects would be produced in court. (Darshana Sanjeewa and Dinesh Upendra)

Investigation will bring the correct picture. But most of the surgeons are charging privately for hospital operations.

Another merchant of death - probably a high ranking official of the GMOA. Thank you Bribery Commission for exposing these scoundrels for what they are.

A possible strike on this issue

    Mandy Monday, 03 July 2017 08:13 PM

Since the current GMOA office bearers had their way, doctors have no reputation to talk about. They are a hated lot and hope some good doctors will stand up and obey the HippocraticOath and defy the intended strike on the 5th. to intimidate tthe Court which will give the verdict on the SAITM issue..

    Bindu Monday, 03 July 2017 08:52 PM

There are a lot of unethical things happening with the doctors known to the public. Some of these are played behind the screen and some are very openly done. Doctors prescribe expensive medical tests like scanning, endoscopy etc.etc unnecessarily so that they get their commission. Therefore whether they do strikes or do practise, either way, they keep harassing patients

    RDF Monday, 03 July 2017 09:22 PM

Please name and shame. If not the shame is yours.

    Sriya Tuesday, 04 July 2017 10:37 AM

They cannot do this type of things when Saitam Doctors are there. That is why they cry for Saitam not for any other thing.
