New Democratic Front (NDF) presidential candidate Sajith Premadasa today sought the support of Sri Lankan expiates for his candidature.

In a letter to the Sri Lankan community living abroad, he said the presidential elections this November comes at a crucial time when our country stands at a veritable crossroad in its history, at a time when our democratic traditions, values and institutions as well as the rule of law, are constantly under threat.

He said, “As the candidate of the New Democratic Front at the forthcoming presidential election in Sri Lanka, I am addressing this letter to you Sri Lankan citizens abroad, seeking your support and your blessings for my candidature,” Mr. Premadasa said in the letter.

“The New Democratic Front and I, as its presidential candidate, are committed to transforming our Nation to a forward-looking modern, and a prosperous Nation, by leaving no one behind, by ending poverty and deprivation in all their forms and dimensions and by ensuring equal opportunities for all.

“I take this opportunity to urge all of you concerned sons and daughters of our motherland, to extend your unstinted support to the New Democratic Font and to me, to keep your motherland safe and secure for future generations.”

I do not think Just requesting expatriates to help you to become the new President is enough at this election time to fulfil your future dream. There are numerous highly qualified expatriates who are ready and willing to help Sri Lanka in their acquired skills but you should come up with an orderly plan to reach these experts to harness their talents or for these experts to contact your organization to explain how they may be able to support your specific goals by transferring technologies or other numerous skills which in the long run will help for the betterments of our motherland. Publishing a contact address in Sri Lanka to initiate the connection may help in this matter.

Great that you understand the importance of expatriates - who contribute extensively by remittances to the economy. We will support you. Also we expect you to recognize the contributions made by way of benefits and not tax them .
