The minimum qualification for student admission to a Government or Private medical college should be at least two credit passes and an Ordinary pass ( C 2, S 1) in the biology stream at the GCE (A/L), according to the minimum standards prepared by the Sri Lanka Medical Council stated.

A spokesman of the SLMC said the above minimum qualifications had been prescribed by the council in 2011 and that no change had been made in those qualifications.In the meantime, these standards would be sent to the medical faculties of the eight universities today (11), he said.

According to the spokesman, the minimum criteria are considered as minimum facilities in a government or private medical college, lecture halls and library facilities, the cadre of the lecturers and professors, the number of beds in the medical colleges and the facilities for clinical training etc.

He said he would hand over them to the Minister of Health for the publishing in the gazette after getting the approval from the boards of the faculties of the medical colleges for these standards. (Ranjan Kasthuri)

Please note that before this crazy competition for A/Ls, students entered for Medical, Engineering faculties with C or S passes until late 1980s. Now they are consultants and physicians. Cleverness is not simply cramming and getting 3A s.

Does this mean that the doctors in this country are no more the cream of the country. They are just a rejected lot at G.C.E. A/L who cannot enter any faculty of a state university in this country. They will be of same caliber of politicians in this country and that's what the country wanted.

This is good and reasonable. Two comments though. Firstly, apply the same criteria to students going overseas for their medical degree. Secondly, if there are any students at SAITM not meeting this requirement, accept them on exceptional basis. No more from now onwards.

All the while SLMC was talking rubbish, but this suggestion is very fair. Everything should have a Standard and also, there must be a non-politically motivated, independent committee to ensure that the stipulated Standards are maintained!!!

2C,S is not enough for the Medical College Entrance. Considering the criticality of profession, it is should be increased. The people always compare everything with western world, should voice to increase this minimum qualification as practiced in world reputed universities.After all, A/L science stream results measure the students logical thinking, rational mind, IQ, ability to understand the problems and etc. So, its unfortunate to accept such minimum results as minimum qualification. Considering the current environment, it should be at least 3B.
