Protest in Melbourne against honourary doctorate to Ranil

A group of Sri Lankans belonging to the Sinhalese and Tamil Diaspora in Australia yesterday staged a protest in Melbourne calling for the revoking of the honorary doctorate conferred on Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe by an Australian university earlier in the week.

Those belonging to the Tamil Diaspora had protested by displaying LTTE flags while the Sinhala Diaspora for their part had carried the country's national flag, according to eye witnesses. The protest was held at the time Mr. Wickremesinghe was visiting Deakin University to deliver a lecture.

Eyewitnesses said the Prime Minister had delivered his lecture in spite of the protest and left.

These are Tamil folk protesting as there is no refugee status to be in Australia anymore. These are pathetic attempts to stick to their so called cushy life style. Not that they care for anyone or anything. They could not care any less for the LATE just wile attempts to stay in a country by painting a picture of how hard it is for a Tamil to live in SL when I know so many who live a peacefully happy life. via DM Android App

Those who got many benefits during the previous regime are forced to put money on behalf of them who are carving to come back to power. Getting hundreds of people by giving them money and food is not a such thing today even in Australia where so many Sri Lankans are there seeking part time jobs/without jobs...

I believe that good hard work, research and a presentation of the study is necessary for earning a doctorate,. Doctorates handed over "free of charge" are just to satisfy ones ego or for adding two letters to your business card. I was amused at the gear worn - something similar to the costume worn by Shakespearan actors

Hi Leo, don't take it as a race issue as both Sinhalese and tamils protested.
