President Maithripala Sirisena said he had directed the IGP to take necessary action against those involved in ragging in universities with the co-ordination of university authorities.

Referring to the ragging by some students of the Peradeniya University, the President said it was a disgrace to free education and the universities for senior students to rag the freshers.

He said this when participating at the 75th anniversary of the Ananda Sastralaya in Matugama today.

Dear Hon Sir, Please implement this a.s.a.p. University students, doctors who got degrees thru 'free' education, SAITM protesters .... all should be taught a lesson, a well deserved lesson. Hello JVP , you lost my vote (and many others votes) because of your silly anti-SAITM, anti-SriLankan stand.

since university students get free education by tax payees money , strict rule should be imposed . Who wants their tax payees money to spend on these culprits ?

sack them, bring the criminals charges and let the law takes it hand. It is now or never!

The GMOA members are the result of authorities turning a blind eye to bullying and sadistic behaviour in our Universities and public schools. The GMOA encourages this behaviour as recent events have proved.

Whatever the Z score, sack these sadistic psychopaths so they don't get free degrees to harass population in the future like some TU mafia. Even lower Z scores with mentally balanced individuals should get free education to build the future of SL. Today ragging is sexual attack to cripple, unlike the fun of long ago. Spineless uni authorities should awake and take disciplinary action. In our democracy, should not be deterred by strikes which can be dealt with by law and order. Uni is not immune

Send the inhuman culprits home. Should not show any mercy. University and free education are for the students who want to study and not to behave like animals. Parents also should pay more attention to their children.

For decades University authorities have turned a blind eye and therefore have been complicit in ragging. If the UGC works through them nothing will come of it.

    aravinda Wednesday, 22 February 2017 08:24 PM

That is because the GMOA practice the same culture of fear and intimidation to win their demands.

    aravinda Wednesday, 22 February 2017 06:35 PM

This menace was in our university system for the past several decades and it still continues. The primary reason why this sadistic behavior continues is the lukewarm attitude shown to this issue by our political and university leaderships. Those who commit these acts are not kids but are all grown up adults. Every now and then, the minister makes a big noise to say that there are laws to prevent them but takes no apparent action. This is a serious issue and need of the hour is, strong and honest political will to to stop this menace.

Ragging has been prevalent in all faculties for decades and sadistic ragging is still prevalent in the medical faculties. The GMOA does not condom these activities. via DM Android App

In may be politically incorrect but there should be direct correlation between those involved in ragging and their social class. The third world practice of university selection based solely on exam merit should go,look at how top universities like Oxford and Cambridge make their selection.Ragging is a form of class war.

The University Authorities should sack these sadist rascals. It is the Universities that should take deterrent action against the University Students who resort to harrassment, torture, and sexual assault on the new-comers in the name of ragging. This culture of sadist ragging in the universities should stop forthwith and this could be done only by punishing the rascals caught suitably and by sacking them from the scholarship, without any fear or favour. Such punishment only would serve as a deterrent to future offenders. They not only destroy the life of the innocent victims but they also bring irreparable damage to the reputation of the Institution!
