Piliyandala shooting: police released sketches of suspects

The Police today published sketches of two individuals to help identify suspects wanted in connection with the shooting incident where a Police officer was killed and several others were injured, when two gunmen opened fire in Piliyandala on May 9.

The Police suspect that the suspects in the sketches had arrived on the motorcycle to carry out the shooting.

They said that investigations had revealed that the suspects had purchased the motorcycle from Delgoda on the same day.

They said the IGP had made arrangements to award cash reward for accurate information on the suspects’ whereabouts.

“One of the suspects is between 30 to 34 years of age, 5’3” tall with a thin face and dark in complexion. The second suspect is between 38 and 42, 5’6” tall with being fair in complexion and an average body,” a Police Spokesman said.

The Police called on the public to contact the Nugegoda Division SP - 071-8591641 or 011-2852555 and Colombo Crimes Division on 071-8591727, 011-2662323 or 24 hour hot line No 011-2685151.

Police Constable Chaminda Abeywickreme was killed and Police Inspector M. Neomal Rangajeewa and Constable Chaminda of the Police Narcotic Bureau were injured when the gunmen opened fire at them during a raid in Piliyandala.

Four civilians, including three children were also injured in the shootout. They were admitted to the Kalubowila Teaching Hospital.

The motorcycle used by the suspects to flee the scene was later found abandoned in Maharagama.(Darshana Sanjeewa)

    Please expedite the taking over o illicit weapons which is said to number 40,000. Also make the public aware of the culprits who thwart this project. Keep the public informed about the progress. If the politicians object to this Polic e should strike against fighting crime without innocently sacrificing their valuable lives.
