Minister signs cabinet paper prohibiting burqa

Public Security Minister Sarath Weerasekera said he has signed the cabinet paper to ban wearing the burqa.

Addressing a function in Kalutara, the Minister said, it would directly affect the national security of the country.

He said steps would also be taken to ban more than 1,000 madrasa schools that are not registered in line with the national education policy.

"We know we had a lot of Muslim friends during our childhood. Muslim girls did not wear burqa (the veils that cover the faces of Islamic women) at that time. It is a symbol of religious extremism that came recently. It will definitely be prohibited along with the madrasas.

There are more than 2000 madrasas functioning in the country. None of us can open a school and teach the children whatever they want. All children between the ages of 5 and 16 should be educated according to a national education policy introduced in this country," he said. (Darshana Sanjeewa Balasuriya)

( A face veil covering our faces from our chin right up to just below our eyes ) or as we respectably call it "a mask" - At least -as you call it "the Islamic women" (your new definition) had this preventive measure from virus before the corona plus the preventive measure from your wild gazes as well !. - wonder when the quirk of fate will make all to cover their eyes ! !

What about the effect of such a ban on the tourist sector which used to bring in hordes of Arabs in the past . As most of the Arab ladies from the Middle East don the burqa there will be a no show as their husbands will avoid Sri Lanka. I used to witness hundreds of high spending Arab tourists in the hill country and many benefitted especially the hotels,tourist drivers, shops etc. Won't this section of affluent tourists be cut off and thus we be deprived of urgently needed foreign exchange? We wonder what the Ministry of Tourism has to say?
