Although the opposition is painting a negative picture of the MCC agreement, the MCC will not cause any harm to the country, UNP Assistant Leader Minister Ravi Karunanayake said yesterday.
He said this when addressing members of trade unions in Colombo and pointed out that the MCC agreement was initiated by the previous government and the current government had simply continued the process.
“This agreement does not cause any harm to the sovereignty of the country neither will there be any loss of lands or properties. If the agreement is harmful they should prove it with facts,” the minister said.
Moreover, he said the previous government was distant from the people while the UNP had always remained close to them.
The minister said their greatest victory was that of creating a country where people could live freely without fear or worry.
He said they wished to continue the work they began five years ago while overcoming extremism and protecting democracy.
“We may have been unable to fulfil our promises to the people but in the future we want to continue a journey while fulfilling the promises,” the minister said and added that the people knew that the UNP was the only party which could lead the country and therefore even the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) has joined hands with it.
