Hambantota Mayor Eraj Fernando was sentenced to five-years imprisonment by the Hambantota High Court today for threatening a group of UNP MPs.

The mayor brandished a pistol at a group of UNP MPs who visited Mattala in 2014 on a fact-finding mission.

The mayor later claimed the pistol was a toy pistol.

Eraj Ravindra Fernando was re-elected as the Mayor of the Hambantota Municipal Council in 2018. (Sanath Gamage)

All provincial Councils are full of thugs and criminals. Better abolish them and save billions as they only loot.

Good lesson but he will file an appeal and will be out soon. Then the appeal will take a few years and he will be out on a technicality

It took 5-years for the verdict. What a country...
