Additional doctors would be deployed on a temporary basis to minimise doctor shortages at hospitals where dengue epidemic situation existed, Government Medical Officers’ Association (GMOA) said today.

GMOA Secretary Dr. Haritha Aluthge said following a discussion held with the Acting Health Director General the Association had decided to initiate an immediate health relief programme with the support of volunteering doctors to the task.

The Health Services Deputy Director General Dr. Amal Harsha De Silva has been appointed to coordinate the programme with the GMOA, Dr. Aluthge said.

He said GMOA is in the process of identifying the doctors who volunteer to work in those dengue epidemic hospitals, would set up them in Negombo District General Hospital, Infectious Disease Hospital (IDH) Angoda, Ragama Teaching Hospital, Kalubowila Teaching Hospital, Peradeniya Teaching Hospital and etc. (Thilanka Kanakarathna)

Sri Lanka politics has only one hero, the Field Marshal. So I appeal to him to start a national debate to remove the illogical DOCTOR title given to medical practioners. It is this title that had given them the arrogance to hold the nation to ransom.

Most of the Doctors are good and excellent in dealing with patients. Some of them are better at the channelling centre. But few guys who are having EGO about their profession are deteriorating their image. We salute the good Doctors for their valuable service.

this gov is playing footsie with the GMOA. we need the public through people's action to rise against the GMOA.

    Ajja Monday, 03 July 2017 08:22 AM

And who is going to treat the sick doctors in GMOA who are mad on SAITM epidemic???

    BUSHEL Monday, 03 July 2017 08:10 AM

I checked this in negombo. they are exhausted and over worked. simply can't handle the the situ. go and see.

That is why in every other nation they are called Medical Practitioners, the doctorate and professorship is earned through further studies in medical science. And MBBS is a Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery, only in Sri Lanka someone with a MBBS becomes a DOCTOR....

GMOA - you acting like a person woke up from a COMA. You can go back into your COMA, there are enough non-GMOA doctors and medical practitioners who are already on the job. The Ministry can invite Doctors Without Borders and they will do a better job than GMOA.

    Rohantha Sunday, 02 July 2017 11:34 PM

Why GMOA getting involved. It is a trade union. Posting doctors to required hospitals is an administrative function of the health ministry. What a joke

Hemantha Jayawardena Sunday, 02 July 2017 06:49 PM

I was wondering if it is the job of the GMOA to decide on how / who to deploy in a medical emergency. Shouldn't that be the responsibility of the Health Ministry? Are we seeing either an abdication of responsibility by the Health Ministry and/or forcible encroachment by GMOA?

    Dr.Thomas Sunday, 02 July 2017 06:28 PM

All medical officers at Government hospitals claim 120 hours of overtime per month as suggested & motivated by the GMOA. If all medical officers really work during these 120 hours there will be no shortage of medical officers at all hospitals. via DM Android App

I think that 'terrorist' label they've got is hurting them!!!

You have done enough damage to this nation by your unwarranted strikes. Now go do private practice and fill your pockets. Won't even call you govt. Medicos 'doctor' in the future. First name it will be. As if you have PhD's to call yourself doctors?

Dengue epidemic is serious and the drugs to control it is based on hard science which the doctors do not understand.Train the public to administer the drugs and remove the power of the doctors who are fooling us with their ARTIFICIAL DOCTOR TITLE.

    AjithZ Sunday, 02 July 2017 05:32 PM

The approach looks good. However, you can never trust these people. Don't know what they are up to. Government should be very careful. Just can't understand why they can't agree to a win win solution knowing it is almost impossible to close or nationalize SAITM.

    Hubert Sunday, 02 July 2017 04:54 PM

Is it a GMOA function its the DGHS to take action to deploy additional doctors why GMOA ??

    ralahamy Sunday, 02 July 2017 04:40 PM

When did the Doctors' Union become the administrative officers. This is purely administration work to be handled by the Department Heads. The Union has simply orders given to them by the department. You doctors are expected to do the job assigned to you. Keep within the limit. That will be more than enough service for your salary.

BUT .. I THOUGHT THEY ARE IN THE PROCESS OF DENGUE CONTROL.

Medical teams Sunday, 02 July 2017 03:21 PM

At the same time let the foreign governments help us by sending medical teams.. We will see the reaction. Or most probably, this (arrangement of foreign medical teams) would have been in the air, for the GMOA to now "pull up their socks" and act as if they are "saviours" of the nation.

The worm has turned or The worm is turning ? OR OVERTURNING ?

    Dr.Goonatillake Sunday, 02 July 2017 02:12 PM

This is another ploy by the GMOA to temporarily bring in their stooges into the western province hospitals and susequently make the posts permanent. via DM Android App
