Four SL cricketers failed to pass fitness test

Four players in the Sri Lanka Cricket squad have reportedly failed the fitness test conducted at the Sugathadasa Stadium yesterday.

SLC launched the ‘2km Run Fitness Test’ for the National Players to ascertain their fitness levels.

Accordingly, 32 of the players out of a 36 member provisional squad training for the Tour of West Indies participated in the test.

The new test, a standard method of determining the ‘Fitness and Endurance’ levels of athletes, replaced the Yo-Yo method adopted by Sri Lanka Cricket.

According to the new test, players were given a target of running the 2 Kilometer distance within a time frame of 8 minutes and 35 seconds.

‘’Going forward, we will adjust the scores as we get better and become world-class.

The Bowlers, Batsmen, and the Wicket Keepers will be given different time targets,’ said Grant Luden, Physical Performance Manager of Sri Lanka Cricket.

“If a player fails, he can do another test within 40 days, and our idea is to achieve the minimum fitness standards before the T20 world cup, which will be played later this year,’’ added Luden.

This fitness test is absolute nonsense. You don't expect the same fitness level for a bowler, batsman and wicket keeper... And they dont have to have the same fitness level... Do you think our all time great Arjuna would pass this test... Of course not and he doesn't need it because his role is different. Fitness test needs defined depending on the category of the player and not the same for everyone.

Hold on so does this mean that unfit player can get selected even after 10 months if he passed the test while a younger player who is fit at any given time has to make way for a couch potato ?

2km within the time of 8 minutes and 35 seconds should not be an issue for international sportsmen. It is sad and embarrassing that 4 prominent cricketers failed but not surprising given the state of SLC. YO-YO test would have been given up because we are that much behind the expected fitness levels. Most of the top cricketing nations use the yo-yo method.
