A special programme will be initiated from tomorrow to track down undisciplined motorists within the Colombo City limits, police said.
Police media spokesman SP Ruwan Gunasekara said according to the programme, police officers in civvies would travel in ordinary vehicles covering several areas within the city limits and will observe the motorists' behaviour.
He said details of undisciplined motorists would be informed to the police officers in the official outfit on road duties and thereafter those vehicles would be stopped and proceed with legal action.
SP Gunasekara said that the programme was initiated in a bid to reduce road accidents by creating disciplined motorists. (Thilanka Kanakarathna)

cant't you just install more CCTV cameras and catch the culprits with evidence. This is done in many developed countries.Deploying police in civvies will only encourage more bribe taking and would be a drain on manpower

Bus lines were created. But other vehicles on Galle Road use that space to park their cars while Cops are day dreaming. The public also should be given access to complain on such cases and Police officers not doing their job should be prosecuted too.......when will the Police take action against the wrong use of headlights at night? Cops them self don't know the rules 100% and are very very weak in road ethics.......when will these be given attention?? Police.......please answer.....

How many road deaths are there in Colombo? This should happen on roads like the Kandy Colombo and other upcountry roads where the idiot drivers play russian roulette with other road users lives. What's the use of disguises when the Uniformed police turn a blind eye to traffic violations?

This is another gimmick for people who have to obey the law. Will the police stop the queue jumping of the provincial councilor, MP, minister, permanent secretary of ministries? Will they stop the private buses queue jumping?

If properly done without any bribe taking by police all the bus drivers and three wheel drivers will have to face courts

Why in civvies? Motorists behave undisciplined in front of police in uniform. Just teach them to do the duty in uniform, and that will avoid these dramas in civvies. Keep your civvies for more serious crimes being committed in the country

good move. The vehicles could have been stopped by the policemen in mufti themselves if we are able to put a stop to all kinds of idiots using those police-type lights on cars, to make themselves feel important.

Very good initiative provided that this is strictly implemented in mockery land. Why only in CMB. They should be on all major roads to check on mad ass bus drivers and dumb tuk tuk drivers!

Again our INGENIOUS police farce at work! Can disguise to catch undisciplined motorists but cannot disguise and go undercover to catch criminals that are worse.
