A police constable attached to the Mount Lavinia Police has been arrested for allegedly extorting Rs 30,000 from a couple in Borupana, Ratmalana, police said.

They said the constable was charged with threatening the couple who were in a car in the Borupana area on October 2.

The constable has allegedly has accused the couple of behaving in an indecent manner and demanded Rs. 50,000 not to take legal action. He had then obtained Rs. 30,000 from the boyfriend.

The constable was arrested on Saturday night following an investigation conducted into the incident on a tip-off received by the Western Province South Crime Division.
