Turning down requests by the Government Medical Officers Association (GMOA) to be reappointed as the Chairman of the Sri Lanka Medical Council (SLMC), Prof. Carlo Fonseka cited his medical condition as the reason to do so.

Referring to the GMOA strikes, Prof. Fonseka said he would not approve of strikes which demanded the extension of his term as the SLMC Chairman.

“Please do not resort to a strike because of me,” he said to GMOA executive committee members who met him at his residence this morning.

However, Prof. Fonseka pledged to support the GMOA even though he would not be actively engaged in the SLMC office.

Meanwhile, Prof. Fonseka stressed that the standard of medical education should not be diluted at any cost and said that the South Asian Institute of Technology and Medicine (SAITM) should be immediately abolished if it cannot adopt the necessary standards. (By Thilanka Kanakarathna)

That is correct!.SAITM needs to show that it has the correct standards or a path to do so under supervision as soon as possible. I do not understand the problem in adhereing to these. If private medical collage is not allowed the private practice should not be allowed.

Yes well said Carlo. Let someone now run the SLMC - whoever is best but not because the GMOA wants some one to be their favourite. The arrogance of the GMOA is alarming.

Sensible decision by the Professor. Now they will demand Padeniya to be appointed the chairman.

Are the GMOA members on leave to meet Carlo Fonseka or are they cutting their duty being out of office this morning. Meeting him is not Trade Union work to be out of station. They should be charged - over to you Rajitha..

Padeniya made the worse history to GMOA

"...if it cannot adopt the necessary standards!" Mind you, the GMOA pigs. But what if it can and does? Set the standards first and check if they comply, right?

Did standard of education went down because of private/ international schools and institutions? How come that it will work differently with medical education? Be practical and don't be jealous professor!!!

Good stern decision by MR C.F. GMOA wants to chain you to their unreasonable demands to full fill their group via DM Android App

Yes there should be Medical Standards . Such standards should be the same for both Private and Sate Medical Colleges.

    ET Monday, 10 July 2017 04:35 PM

GMOA already has 8 members out of 26 in the SLMC. Another 8 by Faculty boards of Medical colleges.1 each by Dentists association and medical practitioners. So 18 by these agitators. So when the President also joins in 17. SLMC is controlled by the parties agitating for abolishment of all private medical colleges.

This is a circus put up by the GMOA with all the media in tow. But GMOA definitely knew before hand that Prof Carlo Fonseka will not and cannot agree to this demand. Who are the GMOA trying to hoodwink?
