Three British females who entered the floor in which the West Indian cricket team were residing, without permission, at a five star hotel in Colombo, were arrested early this morning.

MSD personnel who were on duty at the time had arrested the 3 women and handed them over to the Colpetty Police.

West Indies qualified to play the semifinal in the ongoing T 20 world cup after they won a thriller against New Zealand in the super 8 qualifying rounds.

Gayle's female guests arrested in Windies rooms

Sri Lankan police arrested three British women who were found socialising in the hotel rooms of West Indies players, including star batsman Chris Gayle, early Wednesday, police and hotel sources said.

Police bodyguards protecting players at the ongoing World Twenty20 arrested the three Britons at the deluxe Cinnamon Grand hotel in Colombo and handed them over to the nearby police station for further investigations.

"Ministerial Security Division (MSD) guards assigned to protect the players carried out the arrest and the three women were handed over to the Kollupitiya police station for further investigations," police said in a statement.

Hotel sources said the women were guests of Gayle and his teammates Andre Russell, Fidel Edwards and Dwayne Smith.

The sources insisted there was no breach of security at the tightly-guarded seventh floor reserved for players and team officials.

"There was no wrongdoing on the part of the players or the women and we are surprised at the police action," a hotel source who declined to be named told AFP. "It is not against the law to be a guest of a player."

There was no immediate comment from the ICC or the West Indies team which will play Australia in the semifinals on Friday.

Police sources said they were awaiting instructions from the International Cricket Council, the organisers of the World Twenty20, to establish if they should press charges.

On September 24, a Sri Lankan broke into the rooms of two Australian cricketers at the same hotel and offered them sex. He was fined 1 000 rupees (around eight dollars) and handed a one-month suspended jail term.

The ICC had described it as a "minor isolated incident".

The authorities had declared floors occupied by cricketers as out-of-bounds as part of security for players during the September 18-October 7 tournament that was billed as the same level as for visiting heads of state.

Hotel security has been a key issue at international cricket tournaments since then-Pakistan coach Bob Woolmer was found dead in his room during the World Cup in Jamaica in 2007.

His death was initially treated as a murder case before police concluded he died of natural causes.  (AFP)

Why make a big fuss. Its all part of the game in cavalier style

    Citizen Wednesday, 03 October 2012 12:02 PM

Spoilsports..... but agreed, we can't risk anything in such a high profile tournament. Esp after the Woolmer incident. Not to mention bookies etc, so players need to be guarded a bit extra. If something DOES go wrong, it's a shame to the whole country.

Even in Arab countries this does not happen in star rated hotels

    siva Wednesday, 03 October 2012 11:40 AM

Anyone occupying a hotel room has the full right to entertain his or her guests.Arresting guests of a room occupier is an offence itself. This is going to damage the tourism industry.Obviously the police are not properly trained.Specially trained police for tourists may be the answer.

+What is wrong with these guys having some harmless fun with the girls.so long as tthey are not carrying out illegal activities. The Cops act very fast to catch these harmless girls but Thugs and criminals who deal with drugs and assaults in 5 star hotels are not arrested because of political interference.. They take weeks to arrest the wrong doers. This is Sri Lankan Justice.

    Muniwara Wednesday, 03 October 2012 07:36 AM

If no permission then How they went? That means there was no proper access control. I don't think they jumped through a window. If had proper access control would have been stop them before enter the players area and then there was no need to take them police. Foreigners had to gone Police due to laps in our security.

    Umpire Wednesday, 03 October 2012 07:23 AM
