The National Child Protection Authority (NCPA) is looking into the case of a fourteen-year-old who gave birth to a child at the Castle Hospital in Colombo. The mother and child are being kept under the protection of the NCPA. The NCPA was informed of the situation by the Doctors and Officials of the Hospital and the case was taken up in Courts today.

It is alleged that the young woman was raped at the age of thirteen by a mason who visited the house. Following this incident, a private donor had helped the girl by accompanying her to a private clinic to receive the necessary treatment, the victim had told the NCPA authorities.

She also told the NCPA that her mother is mentally unstable and her father is deceased.

The baby has been placed in an incubator due to it being underweight and not in a good health.

NCPA Chairman Anoma Dissanayake said that they would investigate as to who admitted the girl into hospital as there was no one who would take responsibility at this point.

“Cases such as this are quite common and no doctors or nurses inform the NCPA when they take place. Luckily this was brought to our attention by this doctor at the Castle Street Hospital, and we thank the doctor and the directors for informing us”, she said

The NCPA will follow legal procedures to continue looking after the women and her child due to her being underage.

Police must investigate thoroughly this case and search the culprit and bring him to the courts for further inquiries and punish the guilty person whoever it is.

A gentleman does not steal some else' wife. Ravana was not a gentleman, rather a crook.

    Anushka Thursday, 30 September 2010 01:56 AM

Didn't underrage mothers and rapings never occurred during the past governments? Don't mindlessly blame everything on the government. It only makes the real critics of the government look stupid

Blamming the Media and Internet will not stop these issues...if you leave a female and male regardless of age in a remote island the same thing will happen since its human nature, reproduction is a main duty of any life form on earth.
Therefore people of all age groups should be educated of the consequences of their acts and the responsibilities towards society & humanity Thats what all public organizations (religious, social, Educational) should be doing instead of pointing their fingers at others.

Clergy + education + no poverty

    ND Thursday, 30 September 2010 04:03 AM

So very true. Good tosee some rational thinking here Anushka. Our people criticise every little thing and so the things that do matter get little notice. Also, governments cant do everything. We as a civil society has to take equal responsibility to what happens in the nation.
If my kid is a bully, and hurts your kid, are you going to blame the government? No. You will blame me. And you should. All parents and teachers and all adults have to be responsible for how kids are broght up. You cant scold the schools and government and teachers if your kid fails exams and some other kids pass in the same school.
We Sri Lankans need more personal responsibility.

Sending donations to underage mothers is not a good idea in general. It can turn into a pattern and people can abuse the goodness of your heart. They need more organized help. Hopefully the government will provide a place for her to stay and keep her under their care until she turns 18.

this is not just a man and a woman - this is a CHILD and a MATURE ADULT. Calling this human nature is calling pedophilia human nature. This is not normal- it's a CRIME. Come sick cruel perverted man has taken advantage of a little girl and ruined her life. He needs to pay. sherlock, you need to look at the specifics before commenting. This is RAPE; statutory or otherwise.

We are a civilized country and that is why no death sentences or chopping of body parts are needed. We just need to educate our society.

The sorry state of the country. Suba Anagathayake. This is all that we ordinary citizens can say. As we have been for the last 60 years, live in hope for a better tomorrow, which never comes.

Dammika the Idiot Wednesday, 29 September 2010 02:48 PM

When did Ravana do something like that? Are you really this ignorant. Ravana was a gentleman that he did not do anything to Sita without her consent. Do not comment like an idiot on serious issues such as this news item...

    mw Wednesday, 29 September 2010 02:40 PM

Question: Exactly why do you want to impose the death penalty on these people who have committed a crime?

she has gone through quite an ordeal, thus its better for a humanitarian organization to step in to care for mother and child rather than the produce her in courts and keep her under custody

    Thasneem Wednesday, 29 September 2010 02:11 PM

Underage girl has been abused, child killed by father what action the government is taking to prevent this type of issues?

Some hospitals made compulsary to bring the marriage certificate in order to register the bith of an infant. The age mentioned in a marriage certificate is not always accurate and make compulsary to bring the ID or birth certificate of the mother at the time of the registration of birth. This would help to detect similar cases up to some extent.
