Rizana Nafeek, the young housemaid who was executed in Saudi Arabia could have been saved if the current government was in power in 2013, Deputy Social Empowerment and Welfare Minister Ranjan Ramanayake said today.

He said the appropriate measures taken by “Yahapalana” government had saved the life of the Sri Lankan woman who was to be stoned to death in Saudi.

“If the country had the current government back then, or the former UPFA government had adopted the proper legal measures, we could have saved Rizana back then. The former government didn’t ask for support from powerful countries or take suitable legal measures in the previous case,” he said at a media briefing.

On account of the appeal made by the Foreign Affairs Ministry and the Foreign Employment Ministry, the Saudi Arabian Al Dawadmi Court had commuted the sentence of the Lankan woman who was to be stoned to death, he said.

He described the present case as a sensitive issue and said the current government had dealt with it in the proper manner.(Yoshitha Perera)

No way.....cos both cases were not of same nature one was murder and the other is illegal affair....for murder only the victim family have the right to forgive.....Mr. Ranjan this is not a "one shot movie"....

Cheap politics by Ranjan.. Shame on you. Let that poor girl rest in Peace rather than using her unfortunate death to boost the already unpopular Yahapalanaya govt. Saudi Arabiya rarly stones anyone to death unlike public executions for murder or drug trafficking. Furthermore, if she was stoned to death it would have provoked human rights violation issues by western nations towards Saudi. So she was saved not because of the Yahapalanaya govt. get a life mr Ramanayka.

Although the earlier case of Rizana Nafeek is said to have been a murder , it was not properly proved because of the erroneous translation according to Rizana herself. It is possible being choked to death while a baby is being fed continuously ,not deliberately.

Well both cases were different, so u cant differentiate. U cant blame the previous gvt for it. Grow up.

How could the previous Govt. have taken serious enough action against what happened to Rizana in Saudi when they themselves were involved in many dastardly executions.

Before pointing finger at the previous government please study Saudi law. Adultry and Murder are two different cases.
