This Grease Devil phenomena is a witchhunt against women. The main human rights abuses were against women on both sides of the conflict including rape, torture and murder. After the civil war there were so many war widows who were being targeted by Hindu fundamentalists, Tantrics and conservative Islamic and Buddhist groups. The Grease Devils make the women 'dirty' whereas the 'dirt' is in their own minds. UNHR Commissioner Navaneetham Pillai has lots of experience in this field. As a judge at the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda, Judge Pillay led the landmark decisions defining rape as an institutionalized weapon of war and a crime of genocide. She has been largely silent on this issue in Sri Lanka. As a Thamilichi she should have particular interest in the welfare of war widows and IDP’s but there arises a conflict of interest and perhaps she should step down and bat from the sidelines. It is up t o the police to deal with this issue.
