Wesley College OBU Colombo Celebrates 146th Founder’s Day

• The Founder’s Week celebrations this year will be as follows:  On the 2nd March at 8.00 am

Wesley College - a Premier Christian Boys School in Colombo was founded on March 2, 1874. Every year, the Double Blue Fraternity gather to celebrate the memory of their Founder, the Rev. Daniel Henry Pereira – on Founder’s Day which is the death anniversary of Rev. John Wesley the great Evangelist and Founder of the Methodist Church. This year 2020 Wesley College Colombo celebrates its 146th Birth Anniversary. The Founder’s Day is considered the most important event in the School’s calendar.

Even though this institution was envisaged to be distinctly a Christian Boys School, In the last 146 years,Wesley College opened its doors to provide education for thousands of Sri Lankan boys from diverse religious and ethnic backgrounds. Wesley College, Colombo has produced many Distinguished Alumni, who have contributed invaluable service to the Society, Nation and the world.  In the past 146 years many brilliant Old Boys have lived up to the ideals and values of the Founders, bringing honour and glory to their Alma Mater through their professions, and they will continue to inspire future generations of Wesleyites.

The OBU Colombo together with the OBU Branches overseas are working in close collaboration with the Principal Avanka Fernando and making elaborate plans in preparation for the 150th Anniversary Celebrations of the College with a proposed Rs.150 million Sports Complex project to be opened during the 150th Jubilee year.  

The Founder’s Week celebrations this year will be as follows:  On the 2nd March at 8.00 am there will be a Special Assembly in the College Hall and from 4.00pm onward the Hockey and Football Matches between the Old Boys and Present Boys will be played at the College grounds. Thereafter the Traditional Tea Party will be hosted by the Principal Mr.Avanka Fernando at 5.30 pm. This is followed the Water Polo encounter between the Old Boys and present Boys at 6.30 pm at the College Pool. 

On Saturday, March 7, the Past Vs Present Basketball match will take place at the College Basketball Court at 8.00 am. This will be followed by the 20/20 Cricket Match Old Boys Vs Present First XI Team at Campbell Park from 9.00 am onwards.

The Traditional OBU Lunch will be hosted at 1.00 pm on March 7 at the College Hall, followed by The Annual General Meeting of the Wesley College, Colombo OBU, which will be at 3.00 pm. A Founder’s Day Special Thanksgiving Service will be held at the College Chapel on March 8 at 8.30 am. 

The President and Executive Committee of the Wesley College, ColomboOBU invite all Double Blue loyalists to be present and participate actively in the Founder’s week events, and the AGM on March 7.
