Afflicted Moon and Balarishta

The Sun is the generator of life-force and the Moon stores this life-force. If the Moon does not store the life force generated by the Sun, there is no possibility for survival, says an eminent Indian astrologer.

This is the reason why it is important to examine the position of the Moon in the Natal Chart of a newborn to judge whether the Moon is strong enough to store and protect the life force of the newborn.

  • A weak Lagna and an afflicted Moon indicate Balarishta.
  • A weak Lagna and an afflicted Moon generally indicate infant mortality or Balarishta.  For example, if the Moon is posited in the 6th or the 8th House and is aspected by malefics, the child would die soon after birth.
  • According to ancient Indian sages, most malefic combinations causing Balarishta or infant mortality are Moon-related.

According to ancient Indian sages, most malefic combinations causing Balarishta or infant mortality are Moon-related

Following are some of the Moon-related planetary combinations that have been found to be leading to Balarishta.
  • A weak Moon in the Ascendant aspected by malefics from the first Drekanna of the 7th House.
  • The Moon in Mrityubhaga or sensitive degrees in signs aspected by malefics. The sensitive degrees for the Moon from Aries to Pisces are 26, 12, 13, 25, 24, 11, 26, 14, 13, 25, 5, and 12 respectively.
  • The Moon in the Ascendant with malefics on either side.
  • Combust Moon and Saturn in the Lagna while Mars is placed in the 8th House.
  • Weak Moon occupies the 12th when malefics occupy the Lagna and the 8th House without benefics in the Kendras.
  • The Moon conjunct with a malefic occupies 7th, 12th or the Ascendant and are not aspected by benefics which are outside the Kendras.
  • An early death is indicated when the Moon in the 6th or the 8th House is aspected by malefics. If such Moon gets beneficial aspect the child dies after 8 years and if it gets mixed aspect, the child lives for 4 years.
If the weak Moon is in the Ascendant when there are malefics in the 8th or Kendras or if the Moon is hemmed in by malefics when occupying the 8th,4th or the 7th House, the death of child is indicated.  If the Moon is in the Ascendant when malefics occupy the 7th and the 8th Houses without the aspect of powerful benefics, both the mother and the child would die.

If the Moon occupies the last Navamsa of the sign and malefics are in the 5th, 2nd and the 9th Houses without benefic aspects or if the ascendant is conjunct with the Moon with malefics in the 7th House the child dies.
Both mother and child would die if the Moon joins a malefic in the ascendant eclipsed with Mars in the 8th House.
Child would die if Saturn, Sun, Moon and Mars occupy the 12th, 9th, Ascendant and the 8th Houses respectively without the aspect of powerful Jupiter.

An early death is indicated when the Moon with malefics occupies 5th, 7th, 9th, 12th, 5th or 8th House and is not aspected by or combined with powerful Venus, Mercury or Jupiter.

Houses of longevity
The Houses of longevity are the 1st, 3rd, 8th and the 10th.  If these Houses are strong, death will not occur even if any of the above combinations is present. In such cases the weak Moon may cause ill-health, stunted growth and psychological problems during the childhood.  A strong Moon is the main requisite for mental and physical health.

Retardation of physical and mental development
Afflictions to the Moon by way of aspect, association with natural or functional benefics, placement in evil Houses, weakness in Saptavarga or Shadbala or paucity of Pakshabala could lead to physical ailments, behavioural problems, psychological deficiencies resulting in retardation of mental and physical development.
