State Minister of Water Supply Vasudeva Nanayakkara yesterday said they planned to increase tariffs for domestic water bills exceeding a usage of 15 units.

He told a news conference that those using water below 15 units a month won’t be affected by this increase, but if the bill exceeds 15 units, the entire bill would be charged on the newly increased rates.“According to the law, water tariffs should be revised every three years. But for the past six years, water tariffs have not been revised considering difficulties faced by the people, ” the state minister said.

Mr. Nanayakkara said this increase will not apply to industries, hospitals, schools and other public institutions.
