Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe, after a discussion with a team of his party seniors, decided last night to call for a meeting of the Working Committee on Thursday and conduct a secret ballot to select the presidential candidate, Daily Mirror learns.

The participants of this meeting conducted at Temple Trees were Ministers Vajira Abeywardane, Lakshman Kiriella, Ravi Karunanayake, John Amaratunga and Daya Gamage. They decided that the Working Committee of the United National Party (UNP) should meet on Thursday for the secret ballot to choose the candidate. This decision was taken in the wake of party’s Deputy Leader Minister Sajith Premadasa calling for a secret ballot at the Working Committee to decide on the candidate. He has already announced that he will contest the presidential elections this time. The elections will be conducted on November 16, 2019.
