The Health Ministry insisted that the Covid situation was under control despite a high number of infected persons being detected in the country over the last couple of days.

Health Services Deputy Director General Dr. Hemantha Herath said that there has been an increase in the number of infected persons detected over the past few days.

“A number of infected persons have been detected in various parts of the country. This has not been limited to a particular cluster. But this was expected,” Dr. Hemantha Herath said.  He said that there was an increase in the number of people travelling around the country during the Christmas and New Year holidays.

This had resulted in the coronavirus spreading beyond the Western Province.  The Colombo, Gampaha and Kandy Districts have seen a number of infected people detected over the past few days.  A small number of people have also been detected with the virus in several other areas as well.  However, Dr. Hemantha Herath insisted that the situation is still under control.

He said that the authorities continue to urge the public to limit their travels and ensure they follow the health guidelines to prevent the spread of the coronavirus.
