CSE records highest market cap ever and number of trades in a market day

  • Market cap reaches an all-time high of Rs.3.25tn
  • Number trades tops 52,000, surpassing previous high of 49,921 in 2011
  • Daily average turnover at Rs.7.4bn for eight trading days into 2021

The Colombo Stock Exchange (CSE) yesterday recorded two significant milestones with the market capitalisation reaching an all-time high value of Rs.3.25 trillion and recording 52,559 trades, which is the highest number of trades recorded within a market day. 


The number of trades carried out yesterday surpassed the previous record of 49,921 carried out on August 18, 2011.


The CSE indices and overall market activity continued their upward momentum yesterday, with both indices showcasing gains and the turnover crossing Rs.9 billion, recording a daily average turnover of Rs.7.4 billion for the eight trading days into 2021.


The benchmark All Share Price Index (ASPI) gained 160.99 points, closing the day at 7,443.23, which is the highest recorded since August 21, 2015, showcasing a gain of 75 percent since falling to its lowest point in a decade on May 12, 2020. 


The S&P SL20 index, which includes the 20 largest and most liquid stocks, also increased by 39 points to close on 2,782.17.
