Chancellor of the Rajarata University and a former Deputy Minister Professor A. V. Suraweera has passed away following a sudden cardiac arrest this morning at the age of 83 at his residence, his family said.
His final rites will take place on Thursday, and his body will be buried at the Borella Cemetery.
Prof. Suraweera was born on October 29, 1930, and was a prolific Sinhalese literary scholar and creative writer who has published four collections of short stories, five novels and a range of scholarly works.
His academic training and broad knowledge of classical literature are evident in his writings that display a command of Sinhalese idiom. His first collection of short stories met with acclaim with critics saying, "a new star has been born in the firmament of Sinhalese literature." Honouring his contribution to Sri Lanka scholarship, Suraweera has been conferred the honorific title of Kalakeerthi.
Suraweera was a scholar writer's turned politician. He presently serves as the Director General of the Central Cultural Fund and was earlier Deputy Minister of Culture and Religious Affairs. (Chaturanga Pradeep)
