UNP accuses SF

E-mail Print
Main opposition United National Party (UNP) today accused former Army Commander Sarath Fonskea and the organisers of the joint opposition rally on October 18 of attempting to divide the opposition.

UNP General Secretary Tissa Attanayake told a news conference that the organisers including Mr. Fonseka were carrying out a government contract to break-up the opposition.

He said Mr. Fonseka had turned down a UNP invitation to join the Vipashaye Virodaya a joint opposition group some time back but instead was attempting to form another opposition group by dividing the UNP. “Sarath Fonseka should have joined as without interfering with the internal matters of our party,” he said.
Mr. Attanayake said Mr. Fonseka should remember that to help him the UNP made a great sacrifice during the last presidential election by not fielding a candidate. (Yohan Perera )

What is there to divide anymore? The UNP itself is hopelessly divided!

the main opposition has its own internal politics and they have no backbone to do anything what the gvt is doing and now they are blaming the ones who are trying to make a change. wth

I guess Mr Fonseka Should Join the UNP , thus bringing the UNP in to a power ful state,, Forming a new party wil actually divide the votes.. making the GOverment to stay for ever!!!

Yes, very true. But Ranil must vanish as the leader of UNP and Mr. Fonseka should take over his post. This is the only solution, if he joins UNP. Ranil is one of the weakest leaders in Sri Lanka we ever had.

Forget about parliamentary elections. The point here is, RW can not attract the masses towards UNP/opposition. The question is, can UNP motivate the neutral, ordinary not voting masses in the next election? Unless you do it RW is history perhaps UNP too.

what the UNP should remember is that in all the Provincial council MR got almost 2/3 of the votes polled and that is the reason they did not field a candidate not to help General SF

Looking at the records of election defeats of UNP in the last several decades, do you think, had you fielded a UNP candidate in the last Presidential Elections, today you would have had a UNP President? Whom are you trying to narrate these fairy tales to?

Everyone is aware that the present incumbent as president is power hungry and has usurped unprecedented powers. Democratic institutions are being silenced. The need of the hour therefore is to change the government as well as abolish the Presidency. Towards this every right thinking person must get together and support whosoever is leading the battle. It is stupid for Tissa Attanayake to say that sometime back SF did not join their protest , so the UNP should not support their protest.

Poor leaderships only made this party to this condition.

Mr. Attanayake please wake up & smell the roses, The UNP is no more. You need to wake up open your eyes and see that the UNP party is slowly loosing it's good ppl. You & Ranil need to step down & never come back to the Party, we are fed up of you two & some others bowing down to the Big guy & his govt. it's time some one took control and gave a good fight to him rather than some puppets like you both. Please hear our messages loud & clear to leave the UNP Party with immediate effect.
