Eastern Naval Commander Rear Admiral Jayanath Colombage will assume duties as the new Navy Commander on Wednesday replacing Admiral Somathilake Dissanayake, informed sources said.

Prior to the final selection, the names of Rear Admiral Jayanath Colombage , Rear Admiral S. M. B. Weerasekera and Rear Admiral Jayantha Perera were considered by the Ministry of Defence, they said.

Meanwhile Navy Commander Vice Admiral Somathilake Dissanayake who is to retire tomorrow was promoted to the rank of Admiral by President Mahinda Rajapaksa.

Sri Lanka Navy accorded a 48-member Guard of Honour to the newly-promoted Admiral upon his arrival at the Naval Headquarters yesterday.

Admiral Dissanayake is the 17th naval officer to reach the helm of the Naval Service. He assumed duties as the Commander of the Sri Lanka Navy on January 15 last year. (Supun Dias)

Not trying to be racist, but why can't the president appoint a Muslim or a Tamil officer for that post??

There are mate.... i know few muslims who work for Sri Lankan Army inteligence wing, specially because they are good in both tamil & sinhalese when it comes to comunication, and i believe there should be tamils in forces as well.

selecting an army head or navy head is not a cultural variety show. The suitable persons should come from bottom to top ranks with experience and capability. That is the criteria not race. If there is a tamil, muslim or burgher among the candidates, he will get it.

The question is why tamils are not recruited like they once were even at the bottom ranks?

Fair enough... its a two sided knife... One is the question of equality, why tamils were not treat equally when recruiting for forces, Second is, if we have recruited, we would have fought a war within the forces....So its tricky...

Sach,

Understood.. But what I tried to say is, that I think, we dont have tamils in the forces, so it is not possible for us to appoint a Tamil to the post...

I thought Rear Admiral S. M. B. Weerasekera was more suitable considering his role during the war...
