Animal sacrifice put off on President’s request

Munneswaram Sri Maha Badrakali Amman Devasthanam Administrator Kalimuththu Sivapatha Sundaram said today that the animal sacrifice which was to be held tomorrow had been stopped on a request made by President Mahinda Rajapaksa.

The President had made this request because the ritual coincided with the exposition of the Sacred Kapilawasttu Buddha relics.

However Mr. Sundaram said it would take place after the exposition of the sacred relics is because there were no other reasons to stop it.

“The President has only told us to refrain from carrying out the sacrifice while the exposition of the relic is going on. But we will have it after the exposition,” he said.

Mr. Sundaram said he had not received a written request from the President and would appreciate if such a written request was sent to him.

Meanwhile referring to Minister Mervyn Silva’s statement that he would go to Munneswaram tomorrow and stop the sacrifice, the Devasthanam Administrator said the no one will stop the minister from comming to the temple.

He said he did not want to react to remarks made by the minister. (Yohan Perera and Augastin Fernando)

Why are you questioning Sundaram's religious belief? It is his right. If you are the saint you are claiming to be, go feed others and build houses without ordering others.

What is wrong in killing animals for food? Remember that fish, plants etc are all living things.

What about the animals that are slaughtered and sold for meat and profit. Shouldn't that too be stopped during exposition of the Sacred Kapilawasttu Buddha relics.

Relics are not harming anyone. Slaughtering animals on the other hand is causing loss of life. Ritual slaughter of hundreds of animals like that is brutal and barbaric.

MR should have also ordered the stoppage of slaughter of thousands of cattle,goats etc.,millions of chickens, and millions of fish - the fishermen should have been ordered not to go fishing too.
This request/order only to the kovil is sheer hypocrisy.
Monks order meat dishes for "dane".

Animal sacrifice in not good. But, how come the dirty minded political people kill animals for their daily food is no problem?
There are lots of things to be cleaned in our soul and in our house before follow the real Buddhism or Hinduism.

The need of the hour is put a stop on selling alcohol and thereby save the innocent people. We hear rape and murder stories everyday in our TVs so MR and company including Mervin Silva should step up to put a stop on alcohol not killing of animals. Buddhism, Hinduism & Islam do not allow their followers to drink alcohol or liquor.

The topic is killing animals for consumption and killing animals for religious custom. Both activities are wrong according to Buddhism. Why is Dr. Mervin who is a true Buddhist going only one direction? What would happen if Administrator of Kovil sell the meat after their religious custom?
