Protest in front of Thambuttegama police

A tense situation is reported from Thambuttegama as area residents staged a protest in front of the police station, against the release of a suspect driver who caused the death of a female pedestrian.

The residents had marched with the coffin of the victim towards the Police station and are reportedly pelting stones towards it.

Speaking to the Daily Mirror SP Ajith Rohana said that the police had fired tear gas to disperse the demonstrators.

“The police had to use tear gas to disperse the protesters. The suspect driver who was involved in the fatal accident was produced before the magistrate and he was released on bail by the magistrate. The police opposed bail at the time when the suspect was produced. The situation in the area has now been brought under control” he said. (Daily Mirror Onine) (Pix by Athula Bandara)

People will take law in to their hand when the justice is not meted out. No doubt, a politician may have involved in to the incident to get the suspect driver released. Since there is no Independent Police Commission or Independent Judicial Service Commission functioning in our country we could expect such an unlawful incident.

somewhat similar to the Mannar incident. But this time police will not arrest anyone who protest for an obvious reason.

It is a matter of individualism and political ownership whether it is Mannar or Thambuttegama or else where there is no law and order. It is on the hands of politicians. So vote encourage more of this in future

The police for once did not subvert the system and the judge released the suspect on bail ,and it seems OK

The question is - was she crossing at a pedestrian crossing or just randomly on the road? If randomly then it's not the drivers fault. And this is a lesson that should be learnt!

People can be emotional under these situations. But don't forget that there are errant drivers as well as careless pedestrians. I don't know what happened here but I have seen many people cross the roads without looking at both sides. we were taught during our schools days to look right, then left and again right before crossing. then not to cross if you feel the vehicle speed is high that you are unable to cross. DO WE FOLLOW THIS AS PEDESTRIANS. Law is equal to every one either big or small but who is right and who is wrong.

You cant trust Sri Lankan legal system.Including Police and Judicial.In Sri Lanka the easiest way to kill a person and escape is the road accidents.(Road kills)
