Video: UGC is responsible – Min. Bandula

E-mail Print
The University Grants Commission (UGC) is responsible for devising the Z-score, the Minister of Education and the commissioner of examinations have been absolved of any issue regarding the advanced level results, Minister of Education Bandula Gunawardena said.

The Minister addressing a news conference held at the Isurupaya said, when asked who is to blame for the current fiasco, that no one is to blame. “No one is to be blamed for this, the UGC is responsible for devising the Z score and the eminent professors believed that the methodology was correct. However the Supreme Court believed otherwise, so there is no one to blame” he said.

When journalist s asked the minister if he would resign as requested by certain quarters the minister said he nor were his ministry responsible therefore there is no reason to resign. “Why should I resign? The Supreme Court in its judgment completely absolved me who was the third respondent in the case and the commissioner for examinations who was the first respondent, so there is no reason to resign. We have worked according to our conscience for the betterment of the students throughout” he said.

When journalists at the conference pointed out that the Minister of Higher Education S. B Dissanayake said yesterday that the Ministry of Education was responsible for implementing the Z score and thus responsible for the debacle Gunawardena said that it was not so. Earlier it was the Department of Examinations that released the Advance Level results, Z-scores, district ranks and island ranks. UGC was in charge of releasing the cut-off marks and dealing with Uni admissions.. Has things changed?

No time should be wasted to implement the court verdict admissions should take place without any delay. There is no necessity for ministers to resign who are in no way a hindrance to ascede to court decision .University discards campaign for removal of ministers is to take politicalll advantage and misguide children to resort to terrorisim in the Universities

Resign ? surely this means a promotion, seems as if the more incompatent you are the higher you go !

No one in Gov or state industries ever takes responsibility, whatever happened to the 'buck stops here' Are managers & ministers not responsible for what happens under their watch ? They are in most countries !
