The pressure mounted by international and national forces might see jailed former Army Commander Sarath Fonseka out of prison in the coming days, DNA MP Jayantha Ketagoda said today.Mr. Ketagoda who is also a Member of the Movement to Free General Fonseka told the Daily Mirror that the pressure which the government is currently undergoing might see Fonseka out though no assurance have been given yet. The DNA MP made this point with regard to the speculation that the former army commander is to be released this week.
Besides he said they also expect that the Courts would react positively to his ( Fonseka’s) request for bail. The next hearing of this case is due to be held later this month.
Legal experts said that as the Court of Appeal had not yet given its verdict regarding the ruling of the High Court, Mr. Fonseka’s position became an ordinary remand prisoner from April 26. He completed his first jail term on April 26 though he has not served 30 months as he has got time off for good behavior.
However a family member of Mr. Fonseka said they have not been informed of any thing regarding his release from the government yet though there is speculation that he would be freed in the coming days.
Mr. Fonseka was acquitted in the Hi-Corp case by the high court on March 16 this year. (Yohan Perera)
