Fonseka to be freed?

E-mail Print
The pressure mounted by international and national forces might see jailed former Army Commander Sarath Fonseka out of prison in the coming days, DNA MP Jayantha Ketagoda said today.

Mr. Ketagoda who is also a Member of the Movement to Free General Fonseka told the Daily Mirror that the pressure which the government is currently undergoing might see Fonseka out though no assurance have been given yet. The DNA MP made this point with regard to the speculation that the former army commander is to be released this week.

Besides he said they also expect that the Courts would react positively to his ( Fonseka’s) request for bail.  The next hearing of this case is due to be held later this month.

Legal experts said that as the Court of Appeal had not yet given its verdict regarding the ruling of the High Court, Mr. Fonseka’s position became  an ordinary remand prisoner from April 26.  He completed his first jail term on April 26 though he has not served 30 months as he has got time off for good behavior.

However a family member of Mr. Fonseka said they have not been informed of any thing regarding his release from the government yet though there is speculation that he would be freed in the coming days.

Mr. Fonseka was acquitted in the Hi-Corp case by the high court on March 16 this year. (Yohan Perera)

I think Fonseka is safer behind bars. Out of prison and free, he might meet the same fate as journalists and human rights activists, and disappear forever in a white van.

What better time than in this 'Thrice Blessed' Month of Vesak?
"To follow the Dhamma revealed by the Noble One, is to live in Joy with a Serene Mind" from the Dhammapada verse 79.

I once saw in the paper replying to a question from a journalist
when the war was on,"What are your plans after retirement" the reply was quite simple and trustworthy,"I have my house at Piliyandala that I had not resided for years, I am going to reside in that, before that I had to do some work, involving (makuludel kadala).

He had no intention whatsoever,to do politics at that time.Society, politic ians, hatred, ang er,repentence made this Gentleman to take the deceision to make the country a place without any prejudice to anybody as happened to him.

Let him be as free as any other who has done his utmost for the sake of the country even after facing attack from a suicide bomer.

General should not be the bait for politicians of all calibre.Let him have his freedom to live with his family as others deserve.
