E-mail Print
A manager of an Indian construction company and another were taken into custody by the Ingiriya police for illegally filling marshy land at Wagawatta in the Puruwadanda area. A backhoe and other equipment used by the suspect were also seized.

The two suspects A.N. Gube and D.I. Krishantha were taken into custody during inquiries into a complaint made by the Horana Divisional Secretary who carried out a field investigation with several senior officials of the Environmental Authority, Ceylon Electricity Board, Irrigation Department, and Horana Pradeshiya Sabha.

The main suspect was an Indian and the other the driver of the backhoe who was a resident of the area.  The suspects were produced before the Horana magistrate and released on personal bail of Rs.50,000 and ordered to restore the land.

The divisional secretary said he had warned the construction company earlier not to fill the marshy land. (Nimali Kahawala)
