Shavendra appointed to UN advisory peacekeeping group

Major General Shavendra Silva - Deputy Permanent Representative of Sri Lanka to the United Nations has been selected to the Special Advisory Group on Peace Keeping Operations established by the UN Secretary General to advise on rates of reimbursement to troop-contributing countries and related issues.

This is the first time that a Sri Lankan has been appointed to such a prestigious post relating to peace keeping operations, throughout Sri Lanka’s 50-year long partnership with the Department of Peacekeeping.

Major General Silva will represent the Asia-Pacific States in this Body.
He joins a group of high ranking diplomats who are members of this key body addressing some of the critical issues related to UN peacekeeping.

Among its members are the former Deputy Secretary General of the United Nations and former Canadian Deputy Minister of National Defence Louise Frechette, Former Under-Secretary General for Peacekeeping Operations Jean-Marie Guehenno and former US Assistant Secretary of State James Dobbins.

The group is scheduled to commence their first meeting this month to finalise the scope of its work and working modalities. (Supun Dias)

Washington and Mandela were labelled terrorists by a sector of society for their principles and not for their actions. Crimes against humanity were committed in SL as reported in the UN and LLRC by both LTTE and the SLA for which Maj. Gen. Silva was a prominent Commander in the SLA. Whether Maj.Gen. Silva is involved in such crimes can only be determined by a independent investigation. Until then the question mark remains on his character.

Ha ha, Mandela had a gun shooting around killing people with different skin colour. Washington also did something similar. But for you it is just an enemy made label. Gen.Silva on the other hand went to demolish gunweilding terrorists and he has been accused by pro-terrorist groups who were quoted in the terrorist-friendly Darusman report.

What is going on with the Sri Lankan Media, Don’t they no to check there facts before publication. I was surprised of this article and checked my facts on the UN web page for a press release and what I found was it’s a NOMINATION not a APOINTMENT.
