Court revokes seal on ‘Lanka’

The Gangodawila magistrate today revoked a CID decision to seal the Nugegoda office of ‘Lanka’ newspapers as there was no threat to national security from an article which appeared in the publication. The CID last week sealed the office on the basis an article on the paper was a threat to national security, JVP MP Anura Kumara Dissanayaka said.(KB)

Who is actualy behind this move it is not the CID it is the government . It is a bad omen for free media and democrasy in our country we are heading towards dictotership.

yes, the court too instructed to take off the road barricades in 2002 and LTTE destroyed the colombo city then.
My suggestion is that these type of national security decisions has to be taken up by a panel of judges or president.
What does the ordinary judge knows about the security and coups. All what they could do is to do a postmortem after an incident.

A judge knows very little about national security.

A judge knows a lot about the law.

It's the CID's job to present the evidence to the judge and tell the judge what their intentions/requests are.

The judge will look at the evidence presented and decide if the request, based on the given evidence, is within the bounds of the law.

The reason the system is like that is so that one body does not have too many powers which it can abuse.

The presidents job is to govern the country. The judiciary's job is to make sure the law is being followed.

How childish we are!! The CID "finds" a reason to close a newspaper printer and the courts finds no reason to do so!!! We are the laughing stock even amongst ourselves.

At least we have some hope in the judiciary by way of this Magistrate. Great job done sir! Hope the CID will not go to the Supreme Court, where the Magistrate's ruling may be "over-ruled".

Atleast we hace a magistrate who has the back bone to see it through the injustice and corruption. Lets hope the supreme court too would be the same when it matters.

Once in a while u do get ppl with spunk in this country. Just hope this magistrate will not be transferred. I must add that this news is a breath of fresh air because lately his country has been feeling so much like burma or zimbabwe.
