Swiss journalist can now stay

E-mailPrint

President Mahinda Rajapaksa has revoked a decision to cancel the visa of a Swiss journalist who is in Sri Lanka to cover the Presidential elections. The journalist of a Swiss radio station was earlier ordered to leave by tomorrow, the government information department said.

Karin Wenger of Swiss Public Radio had said last week that she was sent a letter by the Immigration Controller, saying that she must leave the island before Monday and that her application for a media accreditation card had been denied.

She had however already been issued with media accreditation by the Sri Lankan government Department of Information, with the journalist visa valid until Feb 17. 'I fear I have been kicked out for asking uncomfortable questions at a government press conference,' Wenger who is based in New Delhi, told AFP.

Looks like someone became afraid because of the general elections coming up...

Everything has a reason. Jounalists in the West have been creating trouble in the past. It is the majority view that they have supported the Tiger terrorists indirectly. As such, there is very little symapathy for foreign jounalists within the country.

Conscience must be bugging MR once in a while. Probably when brothers are not around. Nice move to lessen the comments about dictatorship. How about Lanka newspaper?
