Currency seized

Customs officials confiscated Rs. 70 lakhs worth of foreign currency being smuggled out of the country at the Katunayaka International airport, Customs Superintendent Parakrama Basnayake told Daily Mirror online.

He said that the currency was seized last night from two individuals, one who was heading to Singapore and another to the Maldives.

The Sri Lankan national who was heading to Singapore had in his possession Rs. 40 lakhs worth of foreign currency including 21,000 Euros, 2800 Swiss frank, 2500 Singapore dollars and 20,000 Sri Lankan rupees, Basnayake said.

Meanwhile a Maldivian national who was heading to the Maldives from Colombo had in his possession Rs. 30 lakhs worth of foreign currency including US dollars 18,500 and 1055 Maldivian rupees. (Daily Mirror online)

Politicians don't smuggle money o/seas, they just get their commissions credited to their Swiss accounts up front!
