Wimal claims cops bribed

Government Minister and National Freedom Front (NFF) Leader Wimal Weerawansa, speaking to reporters a short while ago, claimed that a UN representative had bribed the police yesterday during the protest opposite the UN office in Colombo.

The Minister claimed that as a result of the bribe the police had assaulted the protestors yesterday injuring some of them.

However when contacted by Daily Mirror online police spokesman SP Priyashantha Jayakody said that if there are such claims then the NFF can go before the bribery commission and lodge a complaint against the said police officer.

Weerawansa meanwhile also warned that the NFF will launch a fast unto death with the support of protestors from around the island, if UN Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon fails to reconsider his move to appoint a three member panel on Sri Lanka. (Daily Mirror online)

I think its been said many times, but must be said again: either he is a moron or a political opportunist of the highest order. what he doesn't realise (and what the government doesn't seem to realise) is that such action is causing considerable damage to Sri Lankas' reputation. There were far better ways of handling this issue than resorting to harassment and intimidation .

A minister making such a statement brings disgrace for the govt, are you saying under your govt police are been bribed by UN. You must resign as a minister. This is the difference between west and Asia.

Wimal, You are a minister in this Government. The entire cabinet is held responsible for all your actions and what you utter. Prove beyond any doubt, if you can, the fact that the Police officers had been bribed by the UN Representative. Then the IGP can take action against both parties as per the law of this country.

Wimal no one is above the law. just because your a minister you can just walk in front of a Private building and protest the way you want...!!!...just imagine can a normal civilian walk to the parliament premises and protest the way he wants...?....I will salute the cops in this regard...!!!

This problem could be solved constitutionally. Bring up a proposal to amend the constitution of UN so that secretary general will not have the power to appoint such panels. This is a solution, sri lanka style.

The west dont want a asian country to stand on there own
some thing is going on behind the screen, now the asian
countries should stick together, why same thing will happen to the other asian countries, look at afganistan,palistine and Iraq every day people are getting killed by west.and moon

Mr. Rajapakse. Sri Lanka is the Chairman of the UN Israeli Practices Committee since 1968. Ambassador Palitha Kohona is the Chairman of the Committee.
