UN panel will probe Tigers

E-mailPrint

A UN Experts Panel that will investigate allegations of human rights violations in Sri Lanka will also be considering the actions of the Tamil Tigers during the final stage of the civil war, Panel Chairman Marzuki Darusman said.

Mr. Darusman has been appointed to lead the investigation and told Radio Australia's Asia Pacific program that he will also look into the actions of the rebels during the final months of the civil war.

"This [investigation] would then cover - without any distinction - acts that were committed in the course of that conflict," Mr Darusman said.
Colombo says it's conducting its own investigation into the claims and considers the UN's involvement as "unneccessary interferance".

This week a UN spokesman described the panel as having a mostly consultative role, and that "primary responsibility for investigating rests with the government of Sri Lanka."

But Marzuki Darusman has made it clear that the panel would act independently of the government.

"Any relations or connections with the Sri Lankan government will have to be done through the [UN] Secretary General's office," said Mr Darusman.
He added that the panel is also independent of any nation.

Mr Darusman would not speculate on whether the panel is likely to recommend a war crimes tribunal be established to further investigate the right violations, but said the human rights and legal backgrounds of the panel members indicate the direction the investigation will take.

"We can't foreclose any possibility of going as far as what would be feasible, possible."

The UN panel will convene soon in New York for a briefing and planning session, and is expected to submit their report to Ban Ki-moon in four months.

If we are happy about this, then we should accept its probe on SL government activities during war period. We have to come to a neutral position.

We should start probing from 1983 onwards, without restricting to the period of the recent war.

This looks like an after thought by Ban Ki Moon in order to get an entrance ticket to Sri Lanka.

Sri Lanka suffered for 30 years by the tiger terrorism. The dormant UN, has suddenly got up from the deep slumber and plan to find fault with Sri Lanka for ending terorism successfully, whereas USA is searching for weapons of mass destruction which resulted in thousands of deaths. Ban KI where art thou?

Mazuki is trying to hoodwink the SL authorities by telling that they will investigate any war crimes by LTTE during the last few days. Whom is he going to fool/ Ok say that LTTE has committed war crimes during the last few days, on whom are they going to take action. With Prabhakaran? My foot.
They should in that respect investigate all crimes, atrocities, murders committed by LTTE starting from the killing of Jaffna Mayor Alfred Duraiappa by Prabjakaran himself..

if Sri Lanka looking for approval for its own commission, then it should accept the UN panel too. Why does Sri Lanka is so scared of this panel. It is not an army which can invade the country.

For 30 years LTTE unleashed mayham killing innocent people in villeges, elderly devotees in places of religionn worship, urban workers retuning home by public transport, surrendered policemen in one go ,,,,,,,list contued

All these were done by explosives and ammunisions supplied by diaspora. Repeated calls to those countries to curb fund rasing for 30 years were not heeded.

If LTTE had terrorised or done crims, war or whatever for 30 years, Diaspora ledears responsible for that. Then those government responsible (who are now awaken). Let see this UN panal can see that deep.

Why only investigate last few days? Investigate from 1983,war crimes commited by LTTE. Where were UN during last 30 years? This shows their sudden cunning plans. SL need to put up the strong protest for these goons. This is the end of Banku Moona.

Sri Lanka should not make a fuss about UN as we know at the end of the day most Sri Lankans would like to go west and not towards China or Russia.

Those who call LTTE as terrorist are our friends. Those who call us as terrorist are our enemies. Simple stupid mentality. If we have done some thing wrong then we have to pay for what we did. Can I kill some one and blaming the legal frame work for considering me as a criminal?

UN didnt investigate LTTE when they massacred more than 600 of our policemen who surrendered to them in 1989. Waht is the point in investingating them now ? We have now eliminated the ruthless terrorists. UN please stay away from Sri Lanka, let us mange our affairs ourselves.

WE have to appoint a panel of experts to find the root cause for the tamil problem which led to the arms struggle in early eighties.
1).citizenship act of 1948 by DS government
2)colonisation schemes started by succesive governments which reduced the representation of tamils in paliament
3)The politicians responsible for race riotsof 1915,1956 1981, 1983 and burning of Jaffna public library.ect -Siva
