Storm developing over Sri Lanka

E-mail Print
The Department of Meteorology says a storm is developing over Sri Lanka and this is the cause of the heavy rain and strong winds being experienced in many parts of the country since this morning.

Meanwhile the police said that parts of the Colombo-Kandy road, Colombo-Je-ela road, Colombo Moratuwa road parts of Kandana and many areas in Colombo have been submerged following the heavy rain. (YP)

Is that the same reason why the IDP camps got severely flooded last year?

Thanks Shehan, your response is indeed very penetrating! It is futile for humans to connect up natural phenomena with motives on the part of some imaginary power.

May be the frogs of Moratuwa should be recruited to the Meteorology Department and the unpredictable guys there should be given work in the Drainage Board where they came drain the water after floods!

Why do all these DM commenters try to blame some one for everything? its a storm cloud!! its not the stupidity of the Met Dept or a conspiracy by MR...

Well you see there are plenty of people who are sad that the war on terrorism was won by GOSL successfully. These people are expressing their frustration in everyway and this forum is one of them. That is why even when there is rain, people blame the govt and the met dept etc. You will also notice that most of these comments are made by people from Canada, Norway and UK. Now you see the relationship?

Well these things are not common only to us. Bangladesh is worse hit by rain and floods. Indonesia is affected by earthquakes. Now you see that Europe is affected by a Volcano. We had similar rainy weather in Colombo back in 2006 and 2007. I wonder whether anyone can remember.

Yes.. i also feel the same..i wonder whether this is the start of the 2012 ,the end of the world . It seems that the mother nature is trying to reduce the number of ppl that she can bare.... I think this is the time of all humans to stand together to overcome these natural disasters.

This is the same crap that comes out every year from the monsoonal weather. We simply don't have a proper infra structure to deal with issues set by heavy rains.

We hope that the Infrastructure grant , the Government is getting from the UN, will be used to upgrade main drainage in Towns and cities and to establish and enforce regulations to stop all the illicit building that is going on, not only by poor pavement hawkers, but by influential politicians. This happened in Bangkok 50 years ago, when the system of canals built for moving around the city, was covered up to build roads, in the name of DEVELOPMENT! Sustainable development and non-political expertise is the answer.

After so many days of heavy rain, our MET office has NOW declared that there's a storm developing over the country and that the rain is due to that ! Even a school kid would know that, dear MET office, why don't you fold up and go to sleep again? Or why not report just what you guys know well........that it had RAINED at the following places yesterday !
At least that would be useful !
