CID seals ‘Lanka’ office premises

E-mail Print
The Nugegeoda office premises belonging to the ‘Lanka’ newspaper was sealed off by the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) a short while ago on a Court order, Police Spokesman SSP I. M Karunaratne told Daily Mirror online.

The Police Spokesman said that no report of the reason behind the action taken by the CID had been received to him but that a Court order had been obtained prior to entering the premises.

A journalist attached to the pro JVP newspaper meanwhile said that CID officials at the scene had said that the office was being sealed off because an article published by the newspaper posed a threat to national security.

The Editor of the ‘Lanka’ newspaper, Chandana Sirimalwatte was arrested by the CID last evening after being called over to make a statement regarding a published article that had made revelations about a senior government official. (GDC &RR)

Seen here is the editor of ‘Lanka’ newspaper, Chandana Sirimalwatte being escorted out of his office by the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) who also sealed off the Nugegeoda office premises belonging to the ‘Lanka’ newspaper. Pics by Gayan Amarasekera

What was so bad to arrest , detain and seal the premises?Little too much, just after winning the election. Better things are there to do I guess. This doen't send a good message to the local public and also international.

What happening in this land, MR has the duty to unite everyone behind him if he is a true leader. But, aftermath of the election what is happening is undemocratic and will lead to disaster. WAKE UP PRESIDENT, This is totally unacceptable and need your attention. BE A LEADER who will be rememebered forever, if not u will be remembered for what you are doing.

My dear friends you all should have ,and were given lots of chances to know where your country is heading. When Robert Mugabe said he will take the farms belonging to the white population( some might argue that it was taken away by force but the truth is if not for the whites these areas would have been just like any other area ) and distribute them to the Blacks, which was vote attracting claim ( it was distributed to whom? to the stooges of Mugabe) the people hailed, cheered and worshiped Mugabe. Now what happened to Zimbawe? A country whose people exported food produce are starving. I need not tell you all about the parallels in Srilanka. Only God or for that matter in the language of Srilankans Lord Buddha can save This country.

We have to wait and see!!! For example one may have to pay Rs.300 to 400 for a loaf of bread, gas prices may go up to Rs.3000 to 4000 a cylinder etc. etc.

We want 100% media freedom. But if the media is trying to misuse the freedom and they will try to misguide the peoples using media freedom, nothing to do. Govt will have to control them. Lanka paper also misusing this freedom.

How about the state media my dear? they wrtie the truth and nothing but the truth I suppose. Oh dear, so many deaf and blind people in this country only looking at the rest of the media through blue colored glasses. A day will come in the not too distant future when your eyes will open really wide and then you will see clearly what's happening. Till then, live in your hazy blue world and dream away pal.

Well, here we go again!

Rajapakse cheated and won. Now, we are seeing his true colours He's on a witch hunt for Sarath Fonseka, arresting journalists at will, closiing down newspapers or threatening to! Democracy, my foot!!

I am AMAZED at some of his supporters here who are condoning all this! Can't you see the man is a monster???

I was sincerely hoping that, with his re-election, he'll have a change of heart, but it seems not.

God help Sri Lanka and its children!

Go, ahead. This so called media freedom is tarnishing the image of Sri Lanka by helping maniacs such as Fonseka to come into power, and destroy lanka.

seal all those bloody media centers.

I thought it was the government who was tarnishing the image of Sri Lanka... The killings of journalists and the supression of media freedom... Do you really want to live in a country where you can't express different thoughts, without gettig harrased or even worse - killed? Then you would love Iran, China or why not one of the worst when it comes to media freedom - Mynamar.
