Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa said yesterday a future Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) government would make Colombo free of shanties.
At a forum held at the Foundation Institute in Colombo, he said the yahapalana government showed no interest in going ahead with the project to resettle low-income dwellers at proper housing schemes.
“The programme to remove shanties and resettle these families at housing complexes was begun when President Gotabaya Rajapaksa was the then Secretary of Defence and Urban Development. A future government of ours will resume this programme and provide proper housing to low income families," the Prime Minister said.
He said the Colombo Port City was another project suspended by the yahapalana government. "Had the construction of the port city continued without disruption, most of the project could have been completed by now, providing employment opportunities to future generations," he said. Consider giving shanties free of charge.
BigEars Saturday, 25 July 2020 02:37 PM
Thank You very much. As for me, make Colombo to what it was in 1948. Specially the Railway, bus Service, Water, Electricity and Gas. For the young reads of DM, Colombo has a pipe system for gas and we had a proper Gas Company.

Sorry MR. Anyone with common sense knows your capabilities. Mattala Airport, Hambanthota Port, Jumbo entourage to foreign countries, denied visa to Air Lanka's equal partner Emirate's officer, resulted in break up of high flying Air Lanka. Mihin Air? Not quite sure who was the architect. How about 13 promise to India.....Please give all of us a break and retire!

What has happened to the many poverty eradication programs and improvement of life for the shanty dwellers from the granting, over the many years, of constructed flats. When one goes by train on the up to Gampaha, there are numerous congested pathetic living in shanty conditions, and this appears to have gone on for many years.
