PCoI secretary surrenders to Court

Pearl. K. Weerasinghe, Secretary of the Presidential Commission of Inquiry (PCoI) that probed the alleged incidents of political victimization during ‘Yahapalana’ government, surrendered to the Colombo Permanent High Court Trial-at-Bar yesterday through a lawyer following a warrant issued for her arrest.

She appeared before the three Judge-bench comprising Justices Vikum Kaluarachchi, Dhammika Ganepola and Aditya Patabendige in the afternoon through her Attorney Senarath Jayasundara.

The Attorney-at-Law informed Court that his client was ready to hand over all the documents requested by the Court related to ‘Ali Roshan’s matter.

Accordingly, the Court had revoked the arrest warrant issued on the PCoI Secretary and ordered the CID to obtain the relevant documents tomorrow (12).

Meanwhile in the morning, Chairman of the Commission Upali Aberatne also yesterday directed the Commission’s Secretary to handover the relevant documents in respect of the High Court case which was filed against eight defendants including Niraj Roshan alias Ali Roshan.

Earlier, one defendant of the particular High Court case former Colombo Fort Magistrate Thilina Gamage had filed a complaint to the Commission stating that he was politically victimized by continuing a case against him on charges of possessing an elephant without a valid licence.

However, representing the Attorney General (AG), Additional Solicitor General Sarath Jayamanne yesterday informed the Commission that by issuing summons on the AG, the Commission is trying to violate certain laws.

He said that the particular Court case which is being heard at the Permanent High Court Trial-at-Bar at present, reached the final stages and due to the steps taken by the PCoI, the progress of the had been stalled.

Responding to the above statements, the Commission's Chairman emphasized that the officials formerly attached to the CID had provided documents which were irrelevant to the Commission and the Commission has files with muddled documents. (Yoshitha Perera)
