While expressing that the country is currently at a crucial juncture in terms of COVID-19 situation, Senior Consultant Physician at the Infectious Diseases Hospital (IDH) Dr. Ananda Wijewickrama said situation would end up in a major catastrophe if proper measures are not taken right now.
“It is of utmost importance to take all necessary steps collaboratively and appropriately, if we are to avoid a major havoc in the coming weeks,” he told media today.
“If we analyse the trend in other countries in terms of the spike in COVID-19 cases, Sri Lanka have to face the similar fate that the number of infections would go up further,” he said.
Thus, Dr. Wijewickrama said the country was sure to face an alarming situation in another three or four weeks, if we fail to take appropriate measures.
"Accordingly, people must wear masks properly, use hand sanitizer, wash their hands properly and should maintain physical distancing. It is also important to avoid large gatherings," he pointed out.
“We are paying the price for our bad behaviour three or four weeks ago. If we fail again to follow the health rules religiously, a major catastrophe would be inevitable ,” he stressed.
Meanwhile, Dr. Wijewickrama said there was no issue that the breastfeeding mothers getting the vaccine.
“However, we are yet to determine whether pregnant mothers could be administered with the vaccine,” he added. (Sheain Fernandopulle)

No point locking the stables once the horse has bolted. The government screwed up with advice and the fair and timely vaccine rollout - now all is left is counting the sick and the dead. RIP and God help the rest.
