National Freedom Front (NFF) Leader MP Wimal Weerawansa was released on bail by Colombo Fort Magistrate Lanka Jayaratne today on exceptional circumstances.
He was released on a cash bail of Rs. 50,000 with two sureties of Rs. 500,000 each. The Magistrate also imposed a travel ban on Mr. Weerawansa.
Considering the unpredictable time period that the suspect could be in remand custody, the possible delay of the inquiry and the health condition of the suspect's daughter, the Magistrate decided to grant him bail. (Shehan Chamika Silva)

Even under Yahapalanaya the Judiciary takes instructions from the Politicians.

The PM has instructed the AG not to contest the bail application which helped the judge to make this decision..

This proved his hunger strike was a success. That has triggered to win judge's sympathy. When appeals after appeals were forwarded followed by hunger strike we predicted that this strategy was going to work 100%positive for WW. As layman I do not understand 2 things. The real legal point why the given verdict was changed within few days by the same judge. The other is, how come the bad health situation of the daughter that was there 3 weeks ago was considered as a valid reason for now.
Sunitha Friday, 07 April 2017 02:10 PM
This guy should be stripped off his title. How can he still serve the public? There is no justice. The justice system has become as a laughing stock. Shame on them.
Ghaffa Friday, 07 April 2017 04:57 PM

Shame, not the justice system, but the politicians of all sides, particularly those elected as PM's and Presidents from 2005 right up to today.

Hirunika for different offence, not misusing public property like WW. Hirunika was bailable under normal law while WW was under exceptional circumstances that only the Judge knew about.
Sambo Friday, 07 April 2017 06:03 PM
What a bloody country this has become. Who is this person who has powers to give bail under exceptional powers. One law for the politicians and another for the helpless public. Why were we born in this sinful country to see these happenings? OH! GOD

We never expected this. These miscreants should never be given any leniency law should take its own course.

According to some media reports ,the PM is said to have instructed the authorities concerned to expedite his documentation and not to oppose any possible bail.

This decision confirms that the Judiciary is not independent. .Sad .Others in remand also have children and Avurudu to celebrate.A black mark to the rulers
sanju Friday, 07 April 2017 11:41 AM
Excellent work Mr Lanka. The precedent has been set for many bail applications from the common man in remand. More power to the people, the common people, who also have children traumatised by the plight of their parents.
Tom Friday, 07 April 2017 11:05 AM
Time for the rest of the inmates in prisons to appeal for bail considering the children's plight. MP's children should teach there fathers not to squander public money. Paw ana poor child.

I think the depression has disappeared into the Bay of Bengal! It looks some people can fool all the people all the time!! AB will be turning in his grave!!!
